Winter execution
In much of western Canada the ground is only accessible when it is frozen. The timing window is a licence condition, the frost is a construction input you have to manufacture, and everything liquid on the job is trying to freeze.
Frost is something you build
Access over muskeg and soft ground depends on a frost depth that will carry the spread, and waiting for it is rarely an option. Frost is induced: snow cover compacted or stripped to let cold reach the ground, water flooded on in stages, and tracked equipment dragged over the surface to drive the freeze down — work that starts well before the drilling crews mobilise, at ambient temperatures cold enough to make it worthwhile.
Then the frost you have made has to be got through at every entry, exit and tie-in: ripping the frost cap before excavation, which is a separate operation with its own equipment and its own place in the schedule.
What freezes, and what to do about it
In the lines and the tanks
Circulation systems, tanks and pits need heat, insulation or continuous movement. A shut-down in deep cold is not a pause, it is a freeze-up.
The big one
Strength and leak testing in sub-zero conditions means heated and hoarded water, temperature monitoring through the test, and a plan to get the water out and the line dried without leaving anything to freeze.
In the line itself
Managed with methanol and careful dewatering. An ice plug in a tested line is a serious problem and the management of it belongs in the plan, not in the moment.
The real constraint
Productivity falls, shift changes cost more, and the cold-weather work procedures have to actually be followed rather than filed. An honest winter production rate is lower, and pretending otherwise is where winter schedule claims come from.
The window governs everything
Wildlife timing restrictions, fisheries windows and the frost itself define a period that is fixed and usually short. A winter trenchless programme is a logistics problem as much as an engineering one: the sequence, the number of spreads, the pipe deliveries and the testing all have to close inside the window, and the plan has to have somewhere to stop safely if it does not.
Building the sequence against the window, setting honest winter production rates, planning the frost programme as a scheduled activity with a cost rather than an assumption, and writing the cold-weather provisions into the execution plan and the inspection and test plan so they survive the first hard week.
